Two life`s of Costa Rica

Honza Lasko: How i say in last story, big days on the water just should come during last two weeks in Costa Rica. We were in touch with local hero Ferdinad and he show us a trek to Rio Patria. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip. There was really interesting trek. Probably we would never find a river without Ferdinad. After three hours of sliding thru dense rainforest we finally get a small creek, which was tributary of Patria. we paddled this creek for 20 minutes and volume was probably 1cm3 plus. I have to say, that was sometimes super scary. you run blind over drops where is no water, but we did it and before us was seven hours of steep creeking.

we started walking six a clock and forgot pack our stuff for all day, so with two chocolate bars we were paddling quit fast, no one wants to stay here over night. Awesome gorge with small drops and still keep going for at least 15 kms. There was few crucial rapids, which we finely need to scout, but all smooth and super happy, that we had chance to paddle one of the best run in Costa rica.

after that all our focus was for Chiripo, biggest mountain in Costa rica. From west side is rio Pacifico and from east side rio Atlantico. Both rivers are super cool. Pacifico steep small volume, like Corsica stuff and Atlantico is deepest canyon in Central America and already big river.  First we went for pacifico and we were not lucky enough to get good water, So paddle just one section. We decide to got one day rest on the beach and be ready for Atlantico. No one know what`s going down there. During this season no one paddled Chiripo Atlantico, so local kayakers direct us to village where we should start walking and after that no one know how is going to be. We pack food for few days, camping gear and start walking.

Trek took us almost half day and we pass al the time tribe people who probably never left this valley. Incredible to see people live them live with out touch of civilization and 50km far is touristic town with all modern stuff. Anyway we put in during afternoon and paddle just few kilometr`s. Palo find out, that his boat is crack, which was good start specially before deepest canyon in country. We camp on nice small beach and early morning we paddled to canyon. This day was incredible, pushing water, deep gorge and funny times during hard rapids. We did it with some funny times, but with out any swims, which would be crucial.

so that was it, after that we did some more rivers around Turialba, but this two rivers was definitely best what we could paddle in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica adventure

Honza Lasko: We spend four weeks in Costa rica and I have to say that was really cool after all and happy that we go there. We had not good luck for water first ten days, but still a chance to paddle some classics first on pacific site, like Narancha Labirint or some solid runs around Turialba, which is center of white water in Costa rica. After ten days start raining and we thought, that local river can`t never fill up them KORYTA during dry season. So when we pass Toro Amarilo looks there is just perfect level, someone in car said that could be a little more, so we drove on put in and start paddling TIPICAL class ww4+ in Costa rica. Probably after one minut paddling we relised, that water is probably to high. Took us nest 500 meters then we could take a first eddy, between that all us already got some beating in nasty holes. Water was three time more then is upper level. We finish our run to first bridge and took off with all respect, but definitely scary boating. This days Costa rica got flood which flows from CARIBIC.

So next week we were cruising around and try to find river which is have not to much water or paddling scenic grade 2 river which was this time big 4+ white water. We were lucky to paddling local creek, which needs super high water, Pozo Azul, Rio Macho was really nice to got and discover some local hard and steep creeks. When water strat dropping down, which tooks almost a week we try Toro Amarilo again and was nice river with huge bolders, which we could see last time. Anyway after while we got just ten days left and we got ready for local pearl`s like river Patria, Chiripo pacifico and Chiripo Atlantico. We had this river in head from home and was our goal to do it here.  About this in next story.

B.C. Boating

On the way back to Europe after three weeks paddling in north part of B.C. We came to Canada to paddle a Stikine river, but we were not lucky  for water level. The Stikine has been super high all time when we were in Canada. Three time more water what we wish to have. We have great time in B.C. anyway. Up north is a town Terrace, there is local well know paddler Corey Boux, so our group stuck in his house for a while.

We been paddling there almost every day and got super good boating with few missions. Unbelievable how big potential for white water has this area. We did classic runs and there is so many first descent just few kilometers out of town. I guess that some one could spent all season a paddle every day new river with solid WW.

Weather was a bit issue, cause looks that this year came winter a bit earlier and we got sometimes fresh snow, lots of rain and lots of rivers with high water. This area is for me something new, I live in Europe so I was amaze all the time, when I saw so many salmons in rivers. Waiting for mine buddies in the eddy and watching huge salmons how every second try to jump to waterfall. Sometimes grizzly bear was check in us, what we are up in middle of nowhere. Awesome wild life.

Last days our trip we move a bit south and did some big white water run, secret rapids :), river has 2000cm3 or 70 000cfs, after that some creeks like a run on Rain or Daisy lake run on Chickamus.

Even that weather wasn`t cooperate with us so well, it was super good trip and we were paddling something what is not super well know. We will come back for Grand canyon of Stikine next time for sure, but right know we know, that we are going to stop on the way back from Stikine and gonna run few short box canyon around Terrace.

Already look forward for more paddling in B.C.

Have a good day
